Sedation Dentistry in Manhattan ? Putting dental fear in its place
A trained sedation dentist can make trips to the dentist much easier with dental sedation
I’m sure there’s an official name for being terrified of the dentist (there’s not), but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that some 75 percent of adults in the U.S. are said to experience some degree of dental fear.
Dental Fear Central offers a host of common fears people face when they even think about the dentist – from fear of needles to panicked responses to pain and the relative helplessness of being in the chair.
Sedation dentistry in New York City is for more than those with “dental fear”
There is, however, a method of dentistry that can alleviate many of these common fears – sedation dentistry.
It has been known by a few different names other than sedation dentistry – comfortable dentistry or relaxation dentistry. In fact, according to the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (hey, that spells DOCS), dental sedation is most beneficial for a wider group of patients than those that are completely terrified.
Along with those experiencing “dental phobia,” DOCS suggests a sedation dentist for people with: A severe gag reflex; Time constraints—those who need to get more dentistry done in fewer visits; Chronic or acute jaw soreness; Physical limitations such as back and neck problems; or Extensive treatment needs
The dilemma remains the same, though – dental sedation is a great option for people with “odontophobia,” but how do you get them to understand that and overcome their fears enough to simply get to the office?
Informing the public about sedation dentistry
At that point, it’s all about making sure the general public (specifically those 75 percent of adults with at least a hint of dental fear) is as educated and informed as possible. How many people do you know that can articulate the difference between anxiolysis and conscious sedation? Probably a great deal fewer than 75 percent of the people you ask.
A few good resources for information on the topic are DOCS, the Consumer Guide to Dentistry; 212Smiling.com for information on sedation dentistry in Manhattan and MorrisParkDental.com for a sedation dentist in the Bronx.
Because so many people experience fear about dental work, they put off or avoid going. It doesn’t have to be that way anymore. Sedation dentistry with a qualified, caring sedation dentist can end dental fear, dental phobia, odontophobia, dentophobia…you get the idea.
