There are various techniques for fabricating porcelain crowns. The standard way for feldspathic porcelain, and what’s generally done on the quite outside layer for aesthetics is to paint a “porcelain paste” layer by layer until you get the color/shades you’re searching for. The porcelain powder is mixed with distilled water and then painted on and allowed to dry prior to firing. Lucite porcelain is usually heated and then pressed using high pressure into a mold. Also, now with the advent of CAD/CAM technology, a machine can mill the crown out of a solid block of porcelain using diamond burs.
